Definition: PMPS stands for post-mastectomy pain syndrome. PMPS is a type of chronic postoperative pain that affects many women who have undergone a partial or total mastectomy, or removal of breast tissue. PMPS may also affect women who have had a lumpectomy or reconstructive breast surgery.
PMPS is thought to be caused by nerve damage, including neuroma formation. Some cases, however, may be caused by the formation of a hematoma after surgery.
