Definition: Peripheral nerves are the neurons that exist outside of the brain and spinal cord, and make up the peripheral nervous system. Peripheral nerves send various messages to and from central nerves for interpretation or action.

Peripheral nerves called nociceptors can detect pain sensations in the skin, soft tissues and organs. Through the use of neurotransmitters, they communicate pain signals to the spinal cord and brain. More on how pain is detected and interpreted.
